Craft must be fixed or removed from tarmac

SCOTTSDALE - Aircraft owners at Scottsdale Airport will soon have to fix their planes or have them removed from public view.

A new rule passed by the city's Airport Advisory Commission on Wednesday outlaws eyesore aircraft from parking areas on the tarmac.

Owners of planes with flat tires, missing propellers or dismantled engines will receive a notice to get their aircraft in airworthy condition within 30 days or have their tie-down leases revoked.

The new parking regulation is intended to clean up the tarmac as well as free up space for aircraft owners with airworthy planes who are waiting for a place to park.

Airport Director Scott Gray said some aircraft in need of repair have been sitting in the same location for years without being flown.

The rule was opposed by airport commissioner Thomas Guilfoy, who said it was unnecessary since Scottsdale already has an ordinance that prohibits a junky ambience in public places.

Gray said he wanted the staff to come up with its own rule because the city's was "a little too severe."

There is a short wait for the approximately 100 aircraft tie-down spots at Scottsdale Airport, which cost $36 a month. There is a much longer wait for covered and hangar spaces.

The new rule goes into effect April 22.

Glendale Municipal Airport and Mesa's Williams Gateway Airport have similar rules to prevent unsightly appearances.
