City Council hopeful Onnie Shekerjian squeaked past veteran politician Len Copple in fund-raising, taking in about $2,600 more than the incumbent eight-year councilman she will face in the May 16 runoff.

Meanwhile, a group called Tempe Deserves Better, funded by the Arizona Republican Party, poured nearly $6,300 into campaign mailers critical of Copple.

Shekerjian has said that she is not affiliated with the Tempe Deserves Better, which is an independent committee. advertisement

The figures come from the latest campaign expenditure reports, which cover activities through April 3.

Shekerjian has raised about $27,200 in the race, an increase of $8,800 from the last reporting period. Shekerjian has been active in school issues for years and is the former president of the state charter School Board. During the campaign, she has aggressively backed Mayor Hugh Hallman's proposal to cut the city's secondary property tax.

While Shekerjian raised more overall, Copple raised more money in the latest period, taking in more than $11,000 in contributions. During the campaign, Copple has touted his experience and council record on bus service and light-rail development.

The two candidates who were elected to the City Council during the primary, incumbent Councilman Ben Arredondo and former Tempe Community Council assistant director Shana Ellis, also filed campaign reports.

Arredondo raised nearly $167,000, topping all candidates. Newcomer Ellis pulled in $30,000

Candidate Corey Woods, who was eliminated during the March primary, raised about $11,600.
