So far, House leaders avoid debating Iraq

WASHINGTON - While a majority of Americans say the Iraq invasion was a mistake, a majority of House members have indicated they'd rather not debate the war, or a U.S. troop pullout, on the floor of their chamber.

Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, says the debate he wants, on a resolution to call on President Bush to set a timetable for withdrawal, would be good for the country.

"The entire nation can observe members of the House of Representatives doing more than just standing by passively while this carnage goes on in Iraq," Abercrombie said.

"It will allow us the opportunity to debate fully any position on the war and take votes accordingly on the floor for all to see."

But Abercrombie, along with 90 other Democrats and four Republicans pushing for the debate, have yet to get enough signatures to bring the subject to the floor, and the group is hitting a brick wall in the form of Republican leaders.

The reason: Debating the Iraq war before the 2006 elections could only hurt Republicans and help Democrats, says Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia.

"The TV networks would be all over that. It would be the lead story every night of the debate," he said.

"There is no way that can help Republicans."

But public sentiment may weigh in the group's favor to force a debate on the Iraq war.

A USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll taken April 7-9 found that 57 percent of Americans believe the United States made a mistake sending troops to Iraq.

The poll also found that nearly two thirds of Americans, or 64 percent, including 44 percent of Republicans, favor withdrawing some or all U.S. troops from Iraq.

At the same time, Americans believe Iraq remains at the top of the problems facing the country, according to a Gallup Poll released Thursday.

A quarter of respondents chose Iraq as the nation's most serious problem, up from 20 percent in March.

Another factor that could push the Iraq war onto center stage on the House floor is the war's cost. The total spent so far is about $250 billion, according to the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

Congress is now considering adding another $92 billion to $106 billion to the fund the war.

Supporters hope those factors will be enough to gather the 218 signatures needed to force the debate.
