Bill would prohibit wild-animal feeding

A bill that would ban feeding wild animals has been reincarnated.
A "no feed" amendment to House Bill 2129 was offered Thursday by Sen. Toni Hellon, a Republican from Tucson, where a rabid bobcat attacked a golfer on April 4.
Hellon sponsored an earlier no-feed bill that sailed through the Senate in March but died in committee before it went to a floor vote in the House.
"This gives a consequence to feeding wildlife knowing it would endanger your neighbors. My concern is in urban areas, where homes are close together," Hellon said Thursday.
The proposed amendment, now tagged to a bill to raise fines for illegal killing of wildlife, would ban feeding most wild animals in Maricopa and Pima counties, punishable by a $300 fine.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department has pushed for the feeding ban as a way to reduce danger to people and wildlife.
Animal bites have increased in areas of Maricopa County, where recent urbanization has occurred, according to Game and Fish.
Drought and development have pushed animals out of their normal habitat. Wildlife biologists say setting out food lures predators into urban areas, resulting in violence to humans and wildlife.
The proposed ban would not apply to feeding birds and squirrels and would be limited to Maricopa and Pima coun- ties.
