Munsil's power led to bias policy

It was more than 20 years ago, but it was also the last time Len Munsil, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, headed up a traditionally secular organization.

And when given that executive power, he used it to discriminate against gays and lesbians because of religious reasons.

It happened when Munsil was the 21-year-old editor of the State Press, the campus newspaper of Arizona State University. Munsil decided he would no longer publish meeting announcements of the campus' gay organization.

It is not known how Munsil feels about his decision now. He did not respond to detailed e-mail and phone messages sent to his campaign office.

Munsil did explain his decision to State Press readers in 1985, in a column headlined "The Homosexual Hoax."

"My decision is compelled not by prejudice or malice, but by compassion for an unfortunate group that has been led astray by society," he wrote. "I will not, through tacit approval, be a party to the ultimate self-destruction of its members' bodies and souls."

Meeting notices of the Lesbian and Gay Academic Union had been routinely posted in the Collage section of the State Press. They weren't very tawdry or exciting.

One might announce the group would meet on a particular day in Memorial Union Room 211 to plan spring activities. Or the group would meet by the fountain and then go see a play at the campus theater.

A notation below the Collage section said it was "a free public service provided by the State Press to announce meetings of legitimate campus organizations and clubs." But Munsil decided this group was not legitimate.

" . . . (H)omosexuality has become an abomination in the eyes of doctors," he wrote. This was at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and Munsil rang alarm bells. "Collectively, these people are a modern-day Typhoid Mary."

Munsil cited the Bible in saying homosexual conduct is wrong and worried that impressionable teenagers would be pressured by societal acceptance of being gay. "And when they follow the impulses they are told will make them happy . . . they become the tragic victims of a practice that cannot possibly lead to happiness."

In a column that marked the end of his tenure as editor, Munsil admitted mistakes and apologized for them. "But," he wrote, "I cannot apologize for my beliefs, and for the methods I have used to make the those beliefs known while running this newspaper."

Although Munsil did not respond to direct questions about his long-ago actions, there is not much to indicate his mind has changed.

In 1993, he told the New Times, an alternative weekly, "I agree with every word that I wrote back then. My viewpoint hasn't changed at all."

And this year, in an interview with the Arizona Daily Star, he described homosexual practices as being disruptive to body and soul. "Societies flourish where sexual boundaries are maintained and the boundaries are those that God gave us," he told the Star.

Munsil, in his adult life, has been involved in Christian causes. He headed an anti-pornography group that morphed into the Center for Arizona Policy, a highly influential pro-family organization.

He imposed his views on that group. Volunteers to the Center had to sign an oath declaring that they believed the Bible was inerrant and that the "lost" would be resurrected to damnation.

But now he's seeking to lead all of Arizona. And it's unfortunate that the last example of his leadership over a diverse group was as a college student when he made discrimination a policy.

On the other hand, Munsil's time as editor of the State Press wasn't completely filled with angry rhetoric and fiery editorials. He did find room on the comics pages for "Bloom County."
