Band camp hazing incident to cost school district $50,000

Associated Press May. 2, 2006 07:20 AM

Scottsdale Unified School District officials say a hazing incident involving Coronado High School band students will cost the district nearly $50,000.

A victim of a high-profile hazing case that occurred at a northern Arizona band camp in August filed a claim with the Arizona School Risk Retention Trust, a corporation of school districts that pool their insurance funds to pay legal claims.

Though the claim was filed with the trust, the Scottsdale district agreed to pay a deductible of roughly $50,000, the approximate amount of the claim, said Bob Flach, the district's chief financial adviser.

District spokesman Keith Sterling said both parties signed confidentiality agreements.

Six students were suspended and four expelled in the incident and district officials asked Coronado band director Leslie Rich to resign.
