shooting incidents added to police list Serial shooter feared

Lindsey Collom The Arizona Republic May. 5, 2006 12:00 AM

Phoenix police on Thursday added six more cases to a growing tally of random shootings that has left four people dead in the past year.

Police are investigating a total of 25 cases from Avondale, Tolleson and Phoenix as possible serial shootings. In addition to the homicides, the shootings wounded five people and killed three horses and five dogs.

So far, only four of the cases have been linked by physical evidence.

"Similarities in method of operation, times of day, the randomness make us fear this is the same person or persons," Phoenix police Detective Tony Morales said.

Yet so far, police have little to go on.

The latest Phoenix shootings connected to the list include a man slain at a bus stop and an off-duty cop shot at while jogging in Ahwatukee.

Reginald Remillard, 57, was shot at a Phoenix bus stop May 30. He died two days later.

Someone fired at a 46-year-old woman waiting at a bus stop at 35th Avenue and Bell Road on Dec. 31. She was not injured.

Roberto Estrada, 46, was walking in the 3100 block of East Van Buren Street when he was shot in the left thigh on Feb. 22.

Timothy Bobail, 25, was seriously injured when shot March 10 while riding his bike in the 4000 block of West Camelback Road.

An off-duty Phoenix police officer was fired at during a jog April 7 in the 600 block of East Desert Foothills Drive. She was not hit.

Nicholas Olvera, 20, was shot in the hip while walking home late April 13 on Thomas Road at 43rd Avenue.

Police Sgt. Andy Hill said the number of victims could rise as Phoenix homicide detectives and investigators from other agencies pore through cases to find a common thread. Crime lab technicians also are working to find a link.

The shootings typically occur in clusters late at night or in the early-morning darkness. Targets appear to be chosen randomly: People outside alone or animals that are fenced in.

A light-colored van has been seen in recent shootings, but prior cases may have involved a 1995 or newer Honda-type sedan, dark green or gray with tinted windows.

Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS or 1-(800)-343-TIPS.
